This is very common. Doctors often encourage parents of deaf and hard of hearing children to *not* learn sign.

It is interesting hearing she has nearly the same kind of telltale "deaf voice" ive noticed from English speakers. But seems at least with her as example from my interpretation a Japanese person possibly has it a bit easier to speak with a certain level of accuracy in comparison because less phonemes than English since some things she says I wouldnt notice she is hard of hearing so it doesnt always show through so noticeably but that is coming from someone who doesnt speak Japanese so there may be some things im missing in her voice.

I think the logic makes sense for little kids since in that it isnt very realistic to think they should rely on an interpreter to always be there or that everyone will learn a sign language when it is even smaller in usage than a country's secondary spoken language in many cases. Though someone older it wouldnt likely be necessary to avoid signing. Even if it was taught in schools chances are most kids that dont have problems hearing would forget it as they get older from not using it beyond as a language as kids because so many wouldnt have contact with someone who communicates through only signing so it would fall to disuse. Though id be interested if there has been studies supporting they retain it. I think a compromise is just a few important signs could be taught to children in school since they will more likely retain those rather than information overload them with the full language A language they may never use and may forget entirely. Adults would not have the time or skills to learn as easily as children.



Ah yeah I see. And yeah it isnt really something I thought of much before since usually when you think of someone being hard of hearing you dont think of them being born that way or having developed it at an age before they knew how to speak fluently. But even if they did have problems later i do understand how even that may pose difficulties speaking aloud

I didnt mean not have a child learn, that would make no sense especially with what i said after about teaching non deaf kids a few signs. I just meant they probably would need exposure to to using both communication methods and if they are quite little they wont have the sense to understand this and might only learn to sign from it being easier for them which will lead to their isolation and reliance on others to interpret for them if they cant speak or interpret speech at all. Does that make sense? Im not saying that as a fact though just trying to understand the thought process. Like i said, once they are older that wouldnt really apply id think so it wouldnt be an issue if parents signed if they were capable of learning.

@traed Yes, the thought process you explain makes sense at face value, that is why I linked the article that explains that researchers nowadays think otherwise because of how important is for language development to engage in proper early communication :)
