Welp, even though they proved their skills, these guys still have to take on their academics such as the mid-terms.

Academics is important after all. Seems this episode is slowing down the pacing and focusing more on their school life than the usual competition.

Studying for mid-term or cannot use the mat.. as well as how the coach became a coach from gymnast and how the club is created. It seems like the manager knows him from elementary school. Nurse he met from the hospital he got surgery (?) changed him and is his wife (? seems like he really had a wife).

Don't know why but I don't understand the English they are studying.

Mid terms is a classic arc in most sport/SoL animes, the English is way too funny.
ALSO HE REALLY HAS A WIFE, AMAZING!

Wow, the German in this episode was really good! It sounded a bit stiff and unnatural, but the pronunciation was actually pretty decent, a lot better than what you get with most German dialogue in anime.

The boys are doing great as usual. Everyone is happy with the second-place finish, at least that's what it looks like. Onagawa wants the girls to recognize him. Looks like Misato is going to stay at the dorm with others since they have to work on their teamwork.

As expected from the perfect ace, Misato really knows how to cook, how to do chores, and other stuff around the house. The midterms are coming and many of them struggle except for a few of them. Misato once again never failed or had any problems with his studies. They managed to pass them in the end.

We saw Shida's past and his life in gymnastics and how he lost his ambition to compete again. Shida wasn't lying about his wife after all. I'm glad we got to meet her. She really changed his life with those few words. What a goddess. No wonder he fell in love with her.

Great episode.

Japanese students being bad at English is a stereotype that need to eradicated, unless they're really bad at it? I kinda smell conspiracy about the education system intentionally make Japanese people bad at English just to preserve the use of Japanese language, which I hope is not true!

Anyway I love boys that bad at study, I love when they put the muscle over the brain (so that I can easily manipulate them LOL) And our captain is just right for me, and Onagawa could be add to my list only if he's willing to change his hairstyle back to his original one.

Talking about coach's past, why he treated at Germany? Was the competition happened over there? (where he was injured), or he just flew to Germany just to treat his symptom, which is unrealistic as there are already many good specialist doctors in Japan.

But the real MVP of this episode is his senpai (the rival team's coach), where he help finding his kouhai a job. I usually hate seniority system in school/university because of hazing problem, but if I get a good (and hot) senpai like this, then I wouldn't mind joining the club!

Well, this was an awesome episode. From Misato moving in and showing off his kitchen skills (RIP Watari), through the midterms scare (man, that English), to getting this almost photobook-like look at Shida's story. Like, all his story. His own school days and how his life as an athlete ended - that cut to Germany was abrupt (famous specialists are all over the world, it's nothing unheard of if you're a professional athlete, especially if you're very good, and have a serious injury, to go abroad for more/better possible treatment or at least further examination), but man the details were absolutely perfect and I just loved the contrast between Japanese and European styles in this episode. Even the doctor's German was pretty good, although I'm not sure about him just meeting a random Japanese nurse there - still, that she ended up being his wife, and they ended up being somehow related to Kurikuma is an awesome twist of fate. Same as him meeting Shichigahama and how their relationship developed from there, after he already worked so hard to alter his course of life and settling into a compromise, only to have an opportunity present itself when he's already given up on his dream. It's a bit Hollywood romance drama with all the coincidences, but I don't think it's overdone, rather it fits such an anime quite well. Like, life can just flow like that, more or less, and the way the connections you build at any point in your life accompanying you is also rather realistic (for such a closed world as rhythmic gymnastics, anyway, if nothing else), and idek... inspirational? Motivational? Hopeful? Simply beautiful? Think I'm a little emotional here, but yeah, the entire episode was a joy to watch from start to finish, especially after the intensity of the competition last week, and with the dorm being the frame from Shida's "origin story". (RIP Shichigahama, lmao.)

i dont think its just japanese people lol, can't speak for other country's but here in indonesia only about 2 students in a single class (30 ppl) are fluent in english. (data taken by what i know of my school, but i think its pretty accurate for other schools too) besides them, most struggle a fuck lot on it, just passing it is enough. even if its the literal basics that we already learnt back in pre school lmao

The Ao High gymnastics team are growing more better every episode. With Misato finally joining in the dorm life, everything about him is flawless.

Midterms before more gymnastics, a promise to excel both aesthetically and mentally. Seeing all of them "work hard" in their various ways is also fun, but the most affluent is the near-perfect Japanese-English. Watari is so jealous in the background lols.

So Coach Shusaku is a very hardworking coach behind the scenes, and his backstory indicates so. The feud with current Shiro High Coach Mabuchi, his treatment in Germany from the concussion of his serious injury, and he INDEED has a (German) wife, no kidding. No wonder Shusaku and Asao had met so early on, and the entrance to Ao High only gathering more members to become the eventual 4-men rhythmic gymnastics team, but only after trying so hard to make that dream a reality.

Really impressive how they came about, and it's a team truly worth of promises.
Except the whole studying deal...which shreds just about the ordeal of words, that was the funny kicker. All's on you Shichigahama.

Back to soaring high!

Well, the ace one decided to join in the dorm too catching up the others, which is not a surprising matter. Watari expression never chase to stop me for laughing. Studying, must be hard for the sport boys, not different for them.

Then, in the next sequence, i never expect before, that they explore the way of life for the coach so deeply like that. Moral lesson felt so strong to his story. Its also cleared his wife identity which is indeed related to the only high school girl exist in these show. Little Kurikoma senpai, so cute! Onagawa had a completely different style in the past. I assume he wasn't fell into the idol rabbit hole back there. So, his style still normal. Lol.

At the end, the study and captain dumb promise plot finished Coach Shida last piece of mystery of his background story, with a lot of his intricate. Now, its time for the young soul, to bring him to soar again, and make amend of his past mistakes.

The coach's backstory, while sad, is something we see quite often in sports narratives, and of course in real life. However, I love the execution of it. When Shida was leaving his hospital room, the nurse said, "You're walking Shida-san. You worked hard to be on your own two feet again. . . Please don't diminish your hard work. It might take you to an even brighter future." This part made me cry since I do think people tend to neglect the effort they put into something and only look at the results (which of course makes sense), but it's important for one to see that it's not wasted effort. It will result in something else later on. Shida learned kindness from his wife, and I think that's why he was able to say the words that Futaba needed to hear in the last episode.

Anyways, I guess Misato going home early wasn't because of a sick family member or anything, since he ended up living at the dorm. I'm glad, because I thought the opening was a bait, lol. Misato really is perfect at everything, too. From gymnastics to cooking to his studies.

The wife was real? That's actually surprising.

I like the coach's backstory. I also really love that they mentioned the coach isn't a genius; he's just someone who worked harder than others. And, him being awful to his teammates is quite understandable since he worked his arse off, while the others only complained about having to put even a little extra effort.

The art in some of the shots seemed unfinished. Like, they didn't send it to the people who smoothe the lines or something.

Onagawa looked so ordinary in the past. lol

Misato is good at house work! Futaba should marry him quick. (But, graduate first. That's important.)

Futaba is just so cute. Like when he's struggling with English or when he gets motivated at the end or when he's watching his captain's punishment.

And that brings me to: the captain's punishment! It was so funny how everything was his fault, and no one thought anything of it until Misato pointed it out.

I wonder how I'd feel if I looked out the window of my class, and saw my English teacher doing a super-duper-awesome backflip.

The coach's wife IS REAL!

I enjoyed watching his backstory, his development, the way he met his wife and tried his best to get back into rhythmic gymnastics one way or another. It shows how he matured and grew as an adult.

Misato finally moving in with the rest of the team and immediately rivaling Wataru was so funny, loved that part of the episode.

Another good episode!

Really great episode! Coach Shuusaku quickly became my favorite character in this show after this episode. From the mean spirited and condescending athlete he was before to the coach we all love now ,that backstory was so great. We finally meet his wife as well and most importantly she's real! I can see why Coach always brags about her, she's a keeper. Asao liking the more grumpy and mean Shuusaku is hilarious lmao.

Misato finally moves to the dorm, though I wonder what exactly is his relationship with Sako-chan. Ahh yes, can't have a sports anime without the dreaded midterm exams. Shichigahama really shot himself with that proposition right there, but that doesn't matter anymore cause they passed! Really looking forward to the next episode, it's time to start practicing and beat the shit out of Shiro High.

Just beautiful. Bakuten!! makes me so emotional. They did Coach Shida’s story really well. It’s a simple story but it conveyed so many emotions. He wasn’t perfect/the perfect ace, but a flawed man who mellowed, matured & changed from his injury. His entire outlook changed & humbled. And now he has placed his hopes & dreams on the team♡

Also Shichigahama was so fucking cute back then!!!!!! ♡_____♡

And I found it funny that Misapon was teaching english when Kaito himself is always the butt of jokes when it comes to englishㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

This anime is so criminally underrated (;´༎ຶٹ༎ຶ`)

Most Japanese are actually not very good with other languages, including English. School focuses mostly on teaching them how to translate sentences rather than how to actually speak the language. The pronounciation is also very hard for most Japanese, because there are a lot of sounds they don't use in their native language.
If you're in Japan and talk to random people in English, most of them will panic, because they're not good at it :D

The wife is real! And she's a sweetheart as well!

Great episode. At first, it was being kinda mundane with the standard "preparation before exams" storyline so I was more than pleased when the focus switched from the boys to Shida's character and backstory.
He really was kind of a jerk back then, huh? Such a shame he had to quit practicing the discipline he loves so much because of a severe injury but in the end, I'm glad he managed to overcome his situation with sheer determination as well as with the support of his wife. No wonder why he adores her so much. After all, she ended up being the catalyst for him to start changing for the better.

It must’ve been so painful for Coach when he found out he’d never do gymnastics again. I think his story has a bright side though; his injury gave him the chance to really take a look at the kind of person he was and start over, changing for the better. Everything happens for a reason, even the bad stuff.

This episode was so cheesy it was kinda painful. That head teacher really changed his mind because Shida did a few backflips. Shida's world view really changed because this random nurse said a few words. It's just... cheesy and exaggerated. The comedy have also been annoying me. Like, why do we have to listen to ace guy say "Don't call me [insert adjective] ace" every single episode? I also don't get this decision making from the writers. Why have they been putting so much effort into developing the coach when the main cast is still flat af? Eh, I think I'll give this a few more episodes. Or idk maybe I'll finish it since I'm already halfway through.

So funny how the captain suggested banning from the gym if they failed but the others just realized it.

Good thing they all passed.
