Yuyuko is the ghostly 'princess' of Hakugyokurou, the underworld of those who were 'alive'; she had once been a human. Long ago, after her death by suicide, her body was used to seal the Saigyou Ayakashi, a dangerous youkai cherry blossom tree, so that it would stop killing innocent people. During the events of Perfect Cherry Blossom, she tasks Youmu with finding a way to make the cherry blossom tree resurrect the body buried beneath it, unaware that it was her own body. Forced to abandon her plans, which could also have been her own self-destruction and the return of the Saigyou Ayakashi, she ended up resigning herself to continue with her life.

She has the power to summon death to the souls of mortals, and those souls who perish in this way head to Hakugyokurou instead of Heaven or Hell. Although it might be dangerous to have such power for someone with an unpredictable and impulsive personality, Yuyuko seems to have a strong sense of responsibility despite having such power, and never uses it recklessly or out of spite, or even as a weapon. Ironically it was this power that led her to kill herself in the beginning.

Humans fear Yuyuko due to her incredible power and general fear of the supernatural, but she is very cheerful and friendly. Unlike many ghosts who have human form, her cheerful and humorous personality, incredible beauty and charm can have a captivating effect. She often makes bizarre and seemingly meaningless comments and sometimes seems to state the obvious, so she is often considered a bit silly or "irrational". However, at other times she shows great cunning and insight and sometimes shows an extraordinary level of knowledge However, she never seems to take anything seriously and loves to tease her proper and formal assistant, Youmu, who is her opposite in many ways. She is also well known for her incredible appetite and seems to always have a food-related metaphor ready for any situation
