I went through these phases throughout my life until I become a real anime fan. The short version is this: Shounen -> Magical Girl -> Moar Magical Girl -> EVA Edgelord -> Moenizer -> FABULOUS -> Complete Mix As for the long version: 1st phase (1995-1996) Aside from watching anime on TV (primarily Doraemon), my older brother used to play the Dragon Ball Z and YuYu Hakusho fighting games on SNES (DBZ Super Butouden 2 and YYH Tokubetsu-hen). This was the first time my interest on anime began to manifest, and also my first access to those two big shounen franchise. 2nd phase (1996-1998) During that time, I discovered both Sailormoon (the 2nd season) and EVANGELION. EVA became my most hated anime back then because of how mindfcuk and terrifying it was, resulting on me choosing Sailormoon as my favorite anime in that phase. This affected my taste in anime much later. Also at that point, I also got introduced to several other series from my brother's video clip collection. 3rd phase (1999-2004) Cardcaptor Sakura became my most favorite anime throughout my elementary school days, and it also further defined my taste in anime later. My brother's collection also continued to introduce me to more series. Aside from CCS, there was also Digimon Adventure. That was good times. 4th phase (2006-2009) Because of my hatred towards a certain cartoon show on TV, I threw away all my hatred towards EVANGELION and began my journey of becoming an EVA-geek, disregarding the fact that EVA was designed for mature audiences. In front of my friends at school, I kept trying to look cool by loving EVA with passion and saying this: "This is what teenagers should watch instead of your dumb show! You guys suck for hyping such a childish cartoon show for all the wrong reasons!". Let's say that I was quite similar to Tokyo Ghoul fanboys of today, refusing to give attention to any other currently good series in favor of EVA (there were Haruhi, Gurren Lagann, Gundam 00, CLANNAD, Code Geass, etc). Maybe I was qualified to be an edgelord. 5th phase (2009-2012) From my brother, I discovered K-ON!. This was where my taste that was defined by watching magical girl series came into play. K-ON! became one of my favorite anime of all time because of how many cute girls in there. So, I was really into moe back then. 6th phase (2012-2014) However, I began to realize that good anime series does NOT have to contain moe in it. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has proven it to me, and watching that series made me feel FABULOUS. At that point, I decided to redefine my taste in anime and look for any series that isn't heavily reliant on moe (I ended up picking Shingeki no Kyojin over Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo because of that). Unfortunately, that also means that I'm currently running out of good series to watch as the majority of today's anime are not worth watching except for a select few names. Not to mention, it was the phase where I began to gather up with my friends from the local anime community and also attending various events. 7th phase (2014-now) This is where my interest in Gundam began to finally manifest after being exposed to Gundam Build Fighters. Yes, despite the fact that I've seen the likes of Wing, X, and SEED, I wasn't interested so much in Gundam up until 2014. Thus, I finally became a Gundam fan. Also, during that time, my old taste from liking Sailormoon and CCS actually went into high gear again after I saw Aikatsu!. So, my old taste and new taste are now completely mixed-up. But that still doesn't help me find anymore worth-to-watch new series. |

I know a lot of people started from there. In fact, I hear little about people who started from short anime that aren't Sword Art Online or Attack on Titan. Even they are a minority. Some anime fans also go through this phase of being really ironic and saying 'weeb' a lot. |

I recently just came out of a phase as an anime fan, but I'll get to that in a second. When I first became an anime fan, I was still heavily into slasher flicks like Hatchet. Going by my tastes in movies, I started off with the horror genre of anime, my first anime being Shiki. I watched some of the most bloody anime titles from Blood C to Another. What spelled the end of this phase was after I saw the anime Watamote, which to this day is still my all-time favorite. After that, I sort of went into a phase where I began watching allot of ecchi anime. My first ecchi anime was Shimoneta, and it's still my favorite of that genre. I think what spelled the end of that phase was after I saw Haganai's first season. This is because I began to realized that comedy and slice of life was more along the lines of what I was into. I like pervy jokes that come out of ecchi shows sure, but that's not where my interests solely lied. And also don't get me wrong, I loved Haganai and plan to watch the second season, but other shows that soley relied on audience tittlation while lacking everything else, I grew bored of pretty fast. Haganai was funny and is my favorite comedy anime. I didn't watch it for the few brief moments of nudity in the show's timespan, I watched it for the adult humor and funny dialog between the main characters. This type of humor is part of why I enjoyed Watamote so much. So after I was done with Haganai, that phase ended and now I'm in a phase where I'm trying to watch different types of anime from other genres. Particularly, I'm currently watching anime in the Slice of Life genre, the current show I'm watching being Chuunibyou. So that's where I am so far. |

-For me, I started unknowingly like people who have seen cartoons in their childhood (WMT, Cardcaptor, Naruto etc) Then learning anime is a distinct kind of animation and consciously looking for it. -Watched a lot of cutesy Romance (Shugo Chara, Pichi Pichi Pitch, Full Moon wo Sagashite) Weeaboo phase. -'Grew' out of girly romance and watched action (eg. Full Metal, D.Gray man, Pandora Hearts, Kuroshitsuji, 07 Ghost, Code Geass Shaman King) basically Shounen-Darkish phase. Very Weeaboo to maturing into a functional member of society phase. -Then while keeping up with newer mainstream anime, broadened to Slice of Life, Sports and all other kinds of genre, also went back to appreciating Romance (eg. Kimi ni Todoke, Natsume Yuujinchou, Mushishi, Barakamon, Free!) Still avoid ecchi tho -Now: Reads more manga and kinda picky with anime, not genre-wise but rating wise Also used to avoid movies but watches that now, reminiscing childhood by watching WMT. |

Phase -2: God orchestrates the Big Bang. Elsewhere in existence, the Star Wars credits roll up screen to overly dramatic music. If you can read this, you don't need glasses Phase -1: Was conceived at the tail end of a virgin's orgasm. Phase 0: In West Philadelphia Kansas City born and raised on Dragonball/DBZ where I spent most of my days... Phase 1: Puberty hits. I discover the internet, which leads to porn, which leads to glorious hentai, muh tentacles and muh dickgirls. "Sure is a tasty ass." This is an easily skipped or overlooked phase. Phase 2: (Interchangeable with Phase 1 for most) Idly watches the odd anime here and there, not really caring about the separation between it and western works. Maybe you'll (not me) search out a series or two because it's the hype thing. You typically only watch things in Phase 3: Takes an interest in specific anime, typically because of either strong recommendation or (in my case) connection to the video game industry. Might start watching series with subtitles here, rather then straight dubs. Phase 4: Considers anime a relevant interest/hobby, but not the primary one. Starts taking recs from friends and watching often talked about series. Non-nostalgic favorites start being discovered here. Phase 5a: Shounen is shit, "insert genre" here is the best thing ever (Magical Girls for me). More non-nostalgic favorites appear. Phase 5b: Taking recs from people that have proven themselves to be reliable in understanding/capturing your tastes, talking about series most people don't know or don't care about. More non-nostalgic favorites appear. Phase 5c: Seasonal series binging. You are the 'ontop of it' guy when it comes to new anime. More non-nostalgic favorites appear. (Phase 5a, 5b, and 5c are all interchangeable, and in some cases any one of these three could be skipped) NOTE: Around phase 6, anime typically becomes THE primary source of entertainment. It also becomes hardest to find new favorites in this era due to constraints. Phase 6a: (Often a continuation of 5b and/or 5a) Anime has gone to shit, why can't we have great series like Eva/Bebop/GITS anymore. Phase 6b: (Often a continuation of all three or any two of the above, but not guaranteed) A desire to learn and discover more about the medium, usually with a returning tolerance, or even enjoyment, of shounen. (This is my current location). Phase 6c: (Continuation of 5b and 5c, or just 5c) Watch EVERYTHING from the current season. Might drop a few titles, but it's an acceptable loss. Ends up with a massive backlog of shows that either are already finished, or were put on hold midway through watching. (Phase 6b can be merged with 6a or 6c, but 6a and 6c are not mergable with each other unless you are an extreme masochist, a liar, or have split-personalities) Phase 7: Burnout. Regardless of above location, anime morphs into a chore and becomes difficult to consume after the extreme binging and consumption. This can be put off, if not downright averted, by pacing your watch rate. Phase 8a: Separation. For whatever reason anime either no longer has a purpose for you, or you no longer have time. This is the end. Hold your breath and count to 10. Feel the earth move and then, hear my heart burst, again. For this is the end. I've drowned and dreamt this moment. So overdue I.... Phase 8b: General satisfaction with ones' own struggle with anime, as you fully understand your tastes and will now watch anime contently, but still with some level of analytical ability catered to said taste. The final 'favorites' will show up here. Phase 9: You complete the holy elitist trifecta of Mushishi, Monster, and Legend of the Gaylord Elitists Galactic Heroes. You ascend to the point that everyone now cares about what you say. Phase 10: You and your waifu bodypillows complete a demonic summoning/transmutation ritual, and you appear in a Hentai OVA as the top dickgirl/faceless male that dominates all the women. Phase 11: You fly a starship across the universe divine. And when you reach the other side; you'll find a place to rest your spirit if you can. Or maybe you'll become a highwayman again. Or you might simply be a single drop of rain. But you will remain. And you'll be back again and again and again and again and again. |

Let's see, in terms of the number of the type of anime I watched... Phase 1: Discover One Piece was a thing called anime and stumble upon full seasons of Love Hina on youtube. Piddle around and watch mostly school romances and crappy rom coms along with some well known titles like Haruhi, a couple KEY anime adaptations, and Naruto. Phase 2: Mostly abandon anime for years save for an occasional rewatch of Clannad or something. Phase 3: Determine to watch through One Piece and do so. Get into HxH. Mostly watch drama, adventure, action, and exceptionally popular stuff (e.g. Steins;Gate). Became aware of seasonals and start watching them lightly. Gain an interest in trying new genres (e.g. mecha: TTGL; SOL: Space Brothers; etc.) and formats (e.g. movies: HAL). Phase 4: Decide to branch out and stop being ridiculously picky based on small quirks like Katanagatari's art style or Spice & Wolf having an apparently part-animal main character despite it being a romance. Discover the wonder of shorts through Introverturtle's shorts watching challenge. Phase 5: Increasing consumption of seasonals that becomes bipolar afterwards. Become more willing to try odd-seeming shows like Ping Pong the Animation. Gain an interest in discovering genre roots and delve into the original Mobile Suit Gundam. Phase 6: Watch lots of anime movies. Phase 7: Dispel many genre prejudices, namely that of ecchi (Shokugeki no Souma, Monogatari), sports (Cross Game), and CGDCT (High School Fleet). Realize I still had heavily unfounded prejudices toward "elitist"-reputed anime and that many are very different from what I imagined (e.g. Cowboy Bebop). Gain a slight increase of interest in romance anime. Phase 8 (current): Dive headfirst into the mahou shoujo genre with the original Sailor Moon. I've either gotten lucky in picking all the good ones or I may have found another favorite genre, as every one I've completed thus far has been a very unique and worthwhile experience in one way or another. Phase 9? (speculative): After exhausting the mahou shoujo genre of titles I'm interested in (esp. other Precures, Utena, Princess Tutu, Madoka) or growing tired of it for a time, I'd like to go ahead and take a similar route with other genres, though I haven't completely decided which yet. The only ones I have somewhat planned out are sports and romance. With sports I'll probably start with Major, Ashita no Joe, Chihayafuru, One Outs, Haikyuu!, etc. With romance I'll probably go Maison Ikkoku, Bluer Than Indigo, Nodame Cantabile, Nana, Nagi no Asakura, etc. Other than that I'm still trying to kind of randomly watch more shows that are generally well reputed or controversial such as Seirei no Moribito, Rose of Versailles, the Aria franchise, Kill la Kill, etc. |

Ay this is one of the best threads I have seen in AD. And good timing actually, because I do feel like I have gone through a few phases. for me it was: 1) omg what is this anime thing.. wow I never knew cartoons could be this good. 2) Watching more anime, but I didn't know much at that point, I just kept watching titles in my comfort zone (SoL/romcom) mixed with a few random recommendations. 3) Discovered seasonals. I never actually watched them as they were airing, but I kept track of new anime coming out. Also tried new genres. 4) Regular anime watcher. I finished like 1 series per week. I have a pretty good idea of what I like and what not, but I am still open to trying new things. Also I was quite active on MAL and AD 5) anime is kind of going to shit// bored of anime. I just came out of this phase actually. idk I just got bored a while ago and decided to take a break. haha and now I'm going back to phase 4 basically |

These: Miyazakiwhore Shounentard Edgelord Ecchimoefag RomanticHopeless SoL fag On a serious note thou, back then VHS rent and TV were my only source. Started off with Miyazaki's films and some random 90s kiddy anime such as Rintama Nintarou, Nube, Shinchan, Project A-Ko (dem tities were glorious in VHS) and the likes. Started to branch out thanks to the internet and MAL mainly. I still do have my preferences but not completely limit myself to a certain genre. So it's more like my taste has constantly broadened in course of years. As of right now, you could say I'm a yurifag as I binge-reading manga tagged yuri and shoujo ai lately. Pleasantly surprised they weren't only smuttyfest as I initially thought. They actually are more progressive compared to your typical romcom out there. TIL |

3xTripple said: Phase 1 the Cringy Noob - You watch the most popular animu and your favorite anime are some of the most popular ones like Naruto, Once Piece, Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist, Dragon Ball Z, Death Note, Attack on Titan, Sword Art Online, One Punch Man Phase 2 the Explorer - you realize that the anime genre is more than just shounen, and begin to branch out into various other anime based on recommendations and reading the synopsis. Girls and women may flock to shoujo, hot guys, romance, and BL whereas guys and men flock to shounen, action, harem, ecchi. BRANCHES BEGIN Phase 3 Route A - The Fledglinng Weaboo :You start to become a weaboo and begin to say things like desu desu, Kawaii, baka, uguu, and may speak broken Japanese. You want to visit japan because you love the culture that you learned about from anime. Often these people start using lots of emojis and have memorized typable faces to use on various Internet forums, chats, and games. Have lots of anime pictures stored on your computer and cellular device, and have at least one detailed anime profiles on the internet. You continue to watch anime, but branch into lesser known ones away from what others recommend. Phase 3 Route B - Everybody else : You continue to watch anime, but branch into lesser known ones away from what other recommend. You now consider yourself an anime fan that has seen a lot of anime. Your interest in japan may be growing, but you may not necessarily want to visit. Phase 4 Route A - Studying Weabooism: Now a fully fledged weaboo, you've been watching lots of anime related content on youtube, perhaps even more so than actually watching anime. You may start drawing characters, playing anime-related games, role playing, creating fan-fic, and have joined nearly every anime/japan related club that you could find in the real world. You may have posters, figures, and clothing. You probably watch hentai. You know what you like in anime and try to find hidden gems in those categories, while still accepting recommendations from others. You may become a seasonal watcher by this point. Phase 4 Route B - The Anime Fans: You know what you like in anime and try to find hidden gems in those categories, while still accepting recommendations from others. You may become a seasonal watcher by this point. However, at this point you may have realized that you need more people to talk to anime about so you try to find people irl or online. You may start to consider yourself an Otaku at this point. Phase 5 Route A - Cringy Weaboo: You are a proud weaboo and have followed various social network profiles relating to weabooism. You have many weeb friends and are a part of weeb communities. You have been called "fucking weeb" at least once before. You may introduce yourself as a weaboo. You dress like an anime character. You have a pretty solid amount of knowledge about anime and are struggling to find more that you are interested in. You think that you are running out of anime to watch and remain a seasonal watcher. You are peak weaboo. Phase 5 Route B - The Otaku: You may start drawing characters, playing anime-related games, role playing, creating fan-fics. You may have posters, figures, and clothing. You have a pretty solid amount of knowledge about anime and are struggling to find more that you are interested in. You think that you are running out of anime to watch and remain a seasonal watcher. Phase 5 Route C - The Anime Fan: You have a pretty solid amount of knowledge about anime and are struggling to find more that you are interested in. You think that you are running out of anime to watch and remain a seasonal watcher. You may be interested in joining some anime clubs. Phase 6 Route A - Weaboo Disillusionment, Hikikomori? - You get older and realize that people look down on weaboos. You either separate yourself from ordinary social interaction to embrace the final state of weabooism: Cringy Weaboo Saiyan God. You have very few non-anime/game related friends and your family shakes their head at you and wonders where they went wrong. You have trouble functioning in normal society because you believe that real life is like anime and have unrealistic expectations. Or you may start reject the weaboo teachings and become a normal otaku or anime fan. You find out there are hundreds of anime that you haven't seen. You have a long list of things that you want to watch because you know how little anime that you've seen. Phase 6 Route B - True Otaku: You love anime a lot and may want to visit japan, but your speaking patterns haven't changed. You are a part of one or more anime communities. You have a long list of things that you want to watch because you know how little anime that you've seen. You watch hentai. Phase 6 Route C - The Seasonal Anime Fan: You love anime a lot and may want to visit japan, but your speaking patterns haven't changed. You are wondering if you should stop watching anime because it's all just more of the same anyways. You have a list of things that you plan to watch, but your life is getting busier and you don't really want to watch more of the same so you watch a bit less and may just stay seasonal. Phase 7 Route A - The end of Weaboo: You are no longer a weaboo because you are a grown adult with adult responsibilities. You are no longer living with your parents. Perhaps you are on welfare because you have many psychological disorders and can't function in ordinary society. Transitions to Hikikomori, Otaku, Anime Fan, or quits anime entirely. May move to Japan. Phase 7 Route B - The Anime Guru: You are an adept anime watcher with over half a year's worth of anime. This is the highest level of anime watching. You may continue to watch anime seasonal and consider it to be a major part of your life. You wouldn't trade it for the world and have explored many of the older and lesser known anime. Phase 7 Route C - The Quitters: You feel that you have outgrown anime. You may watch it occasionally here and there, but it's all just more of the same and you'd rather do other things than watch shows that you can no longer relate to. Others may transition into Otakus, a small <10% minority will try their hands at weabooism. Phase 8 - You have seen over 1,000 anime titles and are now a Legendary Anime Guru Phase 9 - You have seen over 2,000 anime titles and 300 days worth and are now a Mythological Anime Guru. Phase 10 - You have seen over 500 days worth of anime. At this point, you go into a higher plane of anime existence where almost none have achieved. You are in the top .0001% of anime watchers. At phase 10, basically you ARE Anime *^*. What happens when you try to take all 3 paths in route 6 while being an adult shut in with adult responsibilities of getting better from your disabilities? And like you instead just watch way too much anime in Phase 7? And like... no I don't consider myself a weeb. Just full time Otaku. XD I straight up go to anime club twice a week and Lolita club once a week and compete in Pokemon and Yugioh tournaments... >.> I used to not leave my house. I also go to convention twice a year but there are more than 12 cons a year, I just don't have the money for it. I learned to sew just so I would have more costumes. People actually know me fore wearing costumes and lolita almost every day... >.> And when I am not wearing that, I am trying to dress like some 90's Japanese rockstar or Misa Amane because that is cool right? Actually people stop and tell me they like my fashion all the time. I make most of my clothing now and it is nice to be complemented on my pieces. I feel like I have turned into a model for my own clothes! When I was a child I actually would say I wanted to be an entertainer fashion girl and I kinda think I am living the dream now. Granted I don't yet make money doing it. But I have always had a wild passion for this sort of thing, even before I found anime. Sometimes I think I haven't seen as much anime as everyone else is because I just watch Yugioh a lot. And I indulge a lot in this hobby of things that connect to anime so I can just be with anime all the time. |

How is One Piece compared to everything else? I'm glad you moved beyond it. |

1. discovered anime via Ninja Scroll, Devil Hunter Yohko, MD Geist, Tank Police, Dragon Ball, etc. 2. "grew out of" anime in the 2000s. Got slightly repulsed by it thanks to all the spazzy millennial power-leveling faggots who were getting into it around that time 3. got over myself and started watching some again. mostly discovering 80s/90s gems I missed the first time around because the new stuff is so disappointing. yeah. riveting. |

Well, i tell you my journey as an Otaku. i started by watching general mainstream anime then a lots of horror, ecchi, and shit anime. then i read manga for some anime continuation that doesn't get animated. then manhwa and manhua. i play games too through my childhood years then i watch youtube walkthrough 'cause i don't have time nor the money to buy newer console. and of course job make me busy. Then some ppl on some forum recommended to me to read Light or Webnovel. and so, my journey into the novel world. at first Japan's LN thriumph, then recently Chinese Novel prevail. i don't have certain taste on this particular one. Then the most recent of my journey introduce me to Visual Novel or some would say that I lean into Eroge. thus, the range of entertainment i've been enjoy throughout my recent years. and lately i see anime far from enjoyable compare to another medium. it's really hard to find a good anime for someone like me. Last word: Quoted from ImomortalDreamer translator of Dragon Blood Warrior. I love this world.. Especially the web.. My dream is to make my mind crawl through the web watch every movie, TV series, anime read LNs, WNs, JP novels, CN novels, KR novels i.e every kind of novel and listen to every kind of music of this world out there, meet different people make trusty friends, worthy rivals, and well unavoidable enemies and surpass them.... Of course my most deepest desire is to a find partners whom I love and share this dream with. This man's word were truly awesome ^_^ |

Dhar5by said: When I was first getting into anime, I was all about the big three, then all about the lesser known ones, and then I went from watching action to romance. I'm just curious if there are phases of being an anime fan. What do you think? This is just a generalization and doesn't apply to everyone, but is kinda how I see it. Phase 1: Innocence They watch an animated show or two, not knowing it is anime, or even what anime is. Phase 2: Awakening They finally learn what anime is, the little light comes on "Hey, I've watched some anime already", and since they liked it, they begin looking for more. Phase 3: Taste Development They start to figure out what type of shows/genres they like. They also determine the ones they are least interested in. Phase 4: Delusion They've got a hundred or so shows under their belt now. They think they have pretty good tastes and start offering recommendations to friends/people online, only to find out that the show they thought was awesome isn't well received. This is often the phase where people will claim "anime is dying" or some similar generalization about the anime industry. Phase 5: 2nd Awakening This is where they finally realize that taste is subjective, that haters are gonna hate, most hype-trains are a disappointing ride, their own opinion is the only one that truly matters for them, and that one can find hidden gems in all genres. Phase 6: Meh! They watch occasionally, only when a title/synopsis really catches their attention, and only if they make the time to watch it. Phase 7: Moved On They don't watch anime any more, but if asked, they can still offer up some suggestions that fit the asker's criteria. |
You're never too old to watch anime. If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead. I wake up with coffee & anime, I go to sleep with coffee & anime. Sorry if my sarcasm is bad, it's not my first language. |

Bacteria: "I recently watched [popular, well-known anime] and I liked it." Amphibia: "I´m starting to watch all these super cool anime. My favorite is Death Note." Basic mammal: "I watch so much awesome anime. I like all this stuff." Monkey: "I´m getting into some dark anime. I like it. I´m watching this old show called Evangelion or something." Human monkey: "I really like dark and psychological anime, but everything is good." Human: "I watch dark, depressing, nihlistic anime with symbolism and fucked-up themery. Evangelion is the greatest shit ever made." Übermensch: "Anime is fucking trash. Only 0,01% is even watchable and the rest is endorsed by dumb plebs, who probably enjoy SAO or Fairy Tail. I watch the good stuff, like Evangelion, Lain or Utena and my opinion is more sophisticated and critical than anyone elses. Kill yourself." |

I'm glad you moved beyond it. It's rather unique and hard to compare, actually. For one, it's still the only anime I know of that could be considered a literary epic. Contrary to popular belief, for the most part the length isn't just for show or money milking. Although I can't speak broadly toward the story of the current saga (everything thus far post-timeskip, or episode 517 onwards) since each saga needs completeness for its thematic narrative to fully form and show their relation to the global, work-wide narrative, there's a lot I could say about everything prior. But... you didn't necessarily ask for that, and I don't want to get into writing what could easily become an utterly massive wall of text talking about all of the aspects of One Piece that I think make it noteworthy unless you explicitly ask for more. I will therefore suffice to say that the characters are written excellently and there are many concurrent, well-developed and intertwining themes that form a very cohesive and impressive thematic narrative throughout the entire work thus far. Said themes can be summed up by some of the Pirate King's last thoughts, with the episode upon which his death is fully recalled to be what I consider the "formal introduction" to One Piece's work-wide story, with everything prior laying the foundations. To quote: "Inherited Will. The Destiny of the Age. The Dreams of its People. As long as people continue to pursue the meaning of Freedom, these things will never cease!" A short scene of it, if you're interested. In short, the work rather ambitiously appears to seek to show the meaning and purpose of freedom and how that relates to life, and as such there are a lot of related and underlying themes that are explored along the way-- the nature and usage of power, the different forms of power, the importance of dreams and pursuits (both in terms of the individual and in terms of entire cultures), the passage of those dreams and pursuits from one generation to the next, racism, slavery, the limits of the individual, etc. etc. Although I don't like some recent changes on Toei's end, namely the slower pacing (cutting the number of adapted manga chapters per episode in half, iirc), I still think it's a great work with a lot of potential. Again, its ambitious. I would highly recommend it, but I do recognize that there are many other works that are much much shorter and, being completed, have already fully proven their excellence. I wouldn't blame anyone for being hesitant or unwilling to devote the time in that sense. |

For me it was like: Phase 1: Pretty Cartoons On watching Pokemon and Cardcaptor Sakura on TV for the first time: "These cartoons look so pretty as compared to the others!". Somewhere down the line I had started to get bored with other cartoons and would only watch the toonami time slot with only showed anime. Phase 2: It's not cartoon it's anime Since I didn't have a laptop/PC or even internet connection back then I just kept on searching for other channels and came across Animax where Fullmetal Alchemist is the first thing I watched. Thanks to the channel I learnt that these pretty cartoons were actually called "anime". Phase 3: Trying to get over anime addiction Since Animax aired anime 24x7, I was really getting addicted to a lot of series and just withing a month or two I found myself watching anime most of the time while my friends moved on from cartoons to other TV shows which were not animated. So to get over it, I thought that I'd just not watch any new anime that they showed and eventually be done with the channel once and for all. Phase 4: But anime is Life In the end I still couldn't stop myself, I always ended up turning to Animax during commercials on other channels whenever I watched TV. I tried all the "normal" stuff others around my age watched but it was not my cup of tea and then there it was! God(?) Save Our King! (Kyo Kara Maoh), I really tried so hard to ignore this at the beginning but just couldn't. That was my point of no return, and I just stuck to anime ever since. Let people say whatever they want! Phase 5: Introduction to Japanese Animax would always show dubbed anime with their op/ed in either English or with just some music. The first time I heard a song in Japanese I really loved it and wanted to start learning the language, bought some books and started studying. I started to really love Japan. Phase 6: Otaku, Weebs and Anime Communities After getting into anime and starting with Japanese the first thing I did when I got an internet connection was join anime communities and use random Japanese words here and there while talking with other fans and then proudly call myself an anime otaku. Phase 7: Becoming a complete fangirl I honestly thought that I could just like any and every series as long as it was an anime. My dream was to finish watching all the anime in existence. I literally fangirled over anything I watched. Little did I know about the existence of hentai, yaoi, yuri. Phase 8: Getting into other related media When I found out about the source of the anime I started with reading manga, LNs and wanting to find about about ever other related media such as games, drama CDs and even musicals. Phase 9: Influenced by Others Since most people I met online just liked shounen, I started getting into those anime too, I disliked shoujo and SoL back then, they just seemed way too boring to the me from back then. Since I still liked kkm I ended up joining fb groups related to the series and meeting other fans who turned out to be "fujoshis". They told me that the series was yaoi, drilled into me all the terms of the yaoi fandom and said that I might like other yaoi series too and suggested me some yaoi anime, when I finally watched Junjou Romantica, I was so disgusted with it dropped it after the very first episode and learnt what the words "shounen-ai" and "yaoi" actually meant the hard way. That thing was nothing alike kkm. Phase 10: Realization I stated to see how immature it seemed to just randomly mix up Japanese words into English sentences, it wasn't cool at all. Seeing some of my fb memories just make me cringe now. Being mostly among fujoshis, I started to see the ugly side of fans and how they "misinterpret" anything into something that would suit their tastes. Shipping wars were the worst. Seeing how things actually work, I started to rely less on other fans for info and gather it from the original source aka, the author and other creators on twitter. Phase 11: Getting into fan-translations The series I like had their fan-translations on a stand-still for a few years so on reading the "rules" on baka-tsuki saying that you could pick up any chapter I wanted to and take as long as I can to translate I decided to join in because I wanted to let others read the good parts that I loved. Later I got into subbing drama CDs. Eventually as other "fujoshits" got into translating the series I left baka-tsuki since I couldn't agree with their "methods". I still sub drama CDs though. Phase 12: Tastes in anime gradually changing As I grew up I started to get bored of shounen on one hand and on the other I started liking SoL and shoujo too. The kinds of characters I liked and many other things changed gradually. I still can't like hentai/yaoi/yuri at all. Phase 13: To hell with fandoms This is the phase that I'm currently in. I've had enough with fujoshits, their fujoshitting just keeps on getting more and more deeper and delusional, I really can't find myself shipping a straight MC with another guy neither can I fangirl over fujo bait and watching yaoi is way beyond me and yet I keep on encountering one fujo after another because of the series I like. Could't stand it anymore so I left all the fb groups, unliked the pages and then started to use MAL more often. |

Pre anime: I was a teenaged film buff. My only exposure to animation at all was DBZ, shin chan and doraemon (no millennial cartoons cause even as a kid I knew they were shit) Getting into Animation: I exhausted my Dads DvD collection and didn't know about torrenting so I watched cartoons which were available on the net for free at the time. I quickly found these shows very limiting; both aesthetically and storywise because face it, western cartoons truly are for kiddies. Its a bad cliché but at this stage I absolutely hated anime; the shows my classmates were watching were nothing but hentai to me. Anime: Things like Waltz with Bashir, Heavy Metal, Gandahar and Downfall really blew me away. They showed me that animation was capable of so much creativity on such meagre budgets! Sadly, you can probably count every adult animated feature ever made with your fingers! I was absolutely Desperate for something to watch. Akira had popped up on my youtube recommendations from the prior mature animations I'd seen... Changed my life forever. This whole time, anime was truly what I'd been looking for. What the hell am I? I doubt I can speak for most retro anime fans since they are all 20 years or so my senior. However, like them, I prefer retro anime by far... even after being able to appreciate the newer shows. Obsessed with anime: I may be relatively new to anime but I am already at the point of no return. I aggressively proclaim anime's superiority over western animation and I am no longer a film buff since all I watch is anime. Finishing my ridiculously long PTW is definitely one of my life goals. I wish you all luck in that same endeavour! |

I will admit that unlike music, there hasn't actually been a lot of anime made that perfectly suits my tastes in the medium (Any Oshii related production pretty much codifies my tastes in anime). Nonetheless I'm all down for watching obscure old animes, good or bad! |
